Spring Hill Eyecare serves the community with a wide range of services that go well beyond what most people think of when it comes to optometry.
“A lot of people look at an optometrist and think it’s somebody that tells me whether I need glasses or not,” says Melanie Jenkins, Practice Administrator for Spring Hill Eyecare. “Actually, that’s just a very small part of what we do.”
Dr. Rob Szeliga, who founded the practice in 2005, has steadily expanded through the years, adding new technology, cutting-edge equipment, and associates who are specialists in their fields – all designed to provide complete, family-oriented eye care under one roof.
“We try to be a one-stop-shop,” he explains. “We offer the whole spectrum of eye healthcare.”
While glasses and the latest in contacts are certainly available here, comprehensive eye exams, special testing for various eye diseases and conditions, sports vision training, a dry eye clinic, services for infants and children, and much more. And when it comes to things like early detection of macular degeneration or glaucoma, patients can get the answers they need sooner than later.
“We can do all of that here without sending you to a specialist,” Szeliga says. “Or even just to rule it out. It can be scary when we say we found this in your eye; we’ve got to send you to a major hospital or referral center. Here we can say let’s do another test right now and figure it out.”
He recommends everyone get their eyes examined even if they may not think they need their vision corrected.
“Definitely, not just for optimal vision performance, but there are so many things we can find. We find diabetes, hypertension, and cholesterol just from eye exams. There are all kinds of signs you can see in the eye.”
Eye exams can also catch a serious eye condition early, long before the patient has any indication it exists.
“I always say not everything hurts like a toothache,” says Szeliga. “A lot of things in the eye are painless. You can slowly go blind without any pain.”
He pays close attention to the latest trends in eye healthcare and says dry eye is just one condition he has seen much more of lately.
“It’s a hot topic because so many people suffer with it. And it’s only getting worse with all of these Zoom calls and kids on screens all of the time. We’re seeing younger and younger patients suffering from dry eyes.”
And he says treatment requires more than just prescribing artificial tears.
“Drops don’t keep you from getting worse. They make you feel better, but it’s not fixing the underlying problem. We try to get to the inflammation or the clogged oil glands in the eyelids and treat the root cause.”
He’s also seeing kids starting to become nearsighted at an earlier age, which also ties into extensive computer use. There are treatment plans to help slow some of that down.
Staying on the cutting edge of what’s new in eye care is a top priority for Szeliga and his fellow associates.
“I want us to be the go-to spot for people when it comes to eye care. I want us to be the best clinic we can be.”
