Jaimee Davis has worked in the insurance business for more than 18 years. As agency owner of the Allstate office in Spring Hill, she says what she loves most about her job is building relationships.
“What you don’t realize with insurance is you get to know your clients personally, and you really grow with them. And you have those people who stay with you, and that means so much to me.”
She has a depth of understanding of the value of insurance, some of which comes from personal experience.
“I lost my mom when I was 12,” she says. “I’m one of five kids, and it was the same year we moved to Tennessee. And we didn’t have life insurance.”
As a result, the family struggled for years to make ends meet. Davis worked to put herself through college, graduating from MTSU.
Years later, she saw the difference insurance can make – up close.
“I had these clients, and the dad had died, and the kids were around the same age I was when my mother passed away. And the trajectory of their lives was very different because there was life insurance. They had their college paid for; one went on later to open a business, and another did something else. That’s when I realized it’s your last gift. You can leave a legacy with life insurance.”
Davis, who has a strong faith and felt guided to where she is today, works to educate people on making the best choices to suit their needs with all types of insurance.
Part of that education involves explaining the behind-the-scenes aspects of insurance, such as how rate increases work. Rates are based on collected data reflecting a number of different factors, as with car insurance.
“For example, we have a lot of people moving here from California and New York. Well, some people in New York have never driven before. They don’t drive because they can walk to the store. Here they have to drive to the store, and they’re not as experienced as the person who has been driving here. Or perhaps you have people coming from an area with aggressive drivers, where here we’re more laid back.”
Those outside factors, and others, can affect rates, even if you haven’t had an accident or filed a claim. That’s true for other types of insurance, as well.
When buying insurance, Davis recommends going with an agent.
“It’s going to make a difference when you have a claim,” she says. “If you only have a 1-800 number and you talk to someone, you’re not going to talk to that person again. He or she is in a call center.”
She says it’s important, too, not to base your decision solely on price.
“You should shop to cover your exposure. Because if you get in an accident and somebody sues you, it’s not going to matter that you saved five or ten dollars a month. It’s going to matter that someone is suing you now, and they’re taking your house.”
Davis says helping people protect their home and property is more than just business.
“It’s my passion. That’s why I do it.”
