Shortly after graduating college, Howard Roth accepted what he thought would be a temporary job; a claims adjuster trainee position with State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. A human resource management major, he hadn’t quite decided on a career path but was an avid car enthusiast and thought a job in auto claims might be interesting. “I’m a car guy,” he says, “and this job was with State Farm handling auto claims. I thought, let me just do this for a while until I figure what I want to do with my life. It turned out to be a great job, and I ended up staying there – and in the insurance industry for the next 28 years.”
He quickly began learning as much as he could about the industry and discovered he not only enjoyed furthering his own education but also helping to educate others. In just a few years, he began handling large loss, litigation, and fraud cases and became a claims specialist in the Philadelphia, PA market. After nearly a decade with State Farm, Roth accepted a position with Erie Insurance. It was there he earned his Associate in Claims, Associate in Insurance Services, Certified Insurance Counselor, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, and Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow Designations and moved from claims to a Territory Sales and Agency Management position within the Eastern Pennsylvania market area. In 2009, Erie asked Roth to relocate to Middle Tennessee to aid in the growth of this market as he had done in Pennsylvania.
The above laid the groundwork for Roth to exit the corporate world in 2015 and purchase 50% of an existing independent agency in Goodlettsville, TN. In May 2016, Capitol Insurance Services LLC was formed with offices in Goodlettsville and Spring Hill. The agency offers home, auto business, life, and many other lines of insurance, including watercraft, recreational vehicles, and Medicare supplements. “This agency makes it a point to offer more than just a quote or a policy. We offer service, accessibility, and policy knowledge like no other”, says Roth. “I stress insurance education in that I don’t just provide a quote and send them on their way. I help prospect (and clients alike) understand their coverages and how they apply to their particular situation”, he added. “Insurance is an unknown product to most folks. Most people have no idea what they are buying. It is a necessary evil to most. It is my job to make sure they understand what they need and why they need it. And more importantly, if they don’t need it, it is my job to not sell them what they don’t need.” And furthermore, “what you don’t know now can cost you more later if you don’t have the correct coverage in place and it is my duty to ensure that does not happen,” says Roth.
While his dedication to becoming an expert in his field has a lot to do with professionalism, there is also a personal connection related to his hobbies and interests, especially when it comes to auto and motorcycle insurance. He is not only passionate about classic cars; he also rides motorcycles and was a Motorcycle Safety Instructor for 12 years. “I guess it does kind of link together,” he says when asked. “I’m a car guy and avid motorcyclist. I ride motorcycles quite a bit, and I do a lot of motorcycle travel, and I ride a lot. I was also an EMT and did volunteer EMS for 24 years in PA and NY.” He enjoys sharing his knowledge when it comes to helping others understand what’s available as they make decisions that affect protecting the things they value most. And, more importantly, educating them on how to properly do it.
