When Kolinda Duer opened Healthy Natural Products & Drive-thru in 2018, it was a longtime dream come true.
“I was raised loving the concept of healing the body naturally, if you can,” she says.
She originally planned to open the store with her mom, but in 2013, her mother passed away from ovarian cancer. Devastated by the loss, Duer soon saw pursuing the dream on her own as a way to honor her mother and their special relationship. So, the next year she got her health coach certification and began working at a small, natural health products store.
“I just fell in love with it,” she recalls. “I felt like it was right where I was supposed to be.”
She started looking for a place of her own and found the spot that now houses her business. It’s a perfect location that even has its own drive-thru. In a little more than three-and-a-half years, she’s built a thriving business.
“We have a very holistic approach to health and body, mind and spirit, and try to have an atmosphere of healing,” she says.
The tone is set as soon as you walk through the door with diffusers, soft music, and Duer or a member of her staff ready to help in any way they can.
“What sets us apart from Amazon or maybe even Walmart is we really are trying to spend quality time with customers, listen to them, and from experience and the things I’ve studied, give suggestions,” she explains. “We’re not diagnosing anything, we’re not allowed to do that, but we’ve learned from experience that certain herbs, vitamins, and minerals do have positive effects on the body.”
Conversations with customers can cover a variety of topics or touch on something many are dealing with simultaneously. Lately, she’s had many people ask what to take for a cold or how to rebuild the immune system after COVID. She’s happy to offer suggestions about what’s worked for others, then let the customer decide.
When it comes to most health challenges, Duer says there’s rarely just one answer.
“As Americans, we want a pill. We want a pill to lose weight, we want a pill for whatever, but I think health is very much a puzzle. It’s a myriad of things.”
She stresses that’s why it’s important to take time to talk to people, hear what they’re dealing with, discuss what they may have already tried, and offer options for things to try in the future.
“I like to say, does this resonate with you? Because I believe each of us knows what we need. We may not know it cognitively, but our bodies know what we need.”
In addition to consultations, her store offers other services, as well.
“We have a licensed marriage and family therapist on staff. She’s here every Wednesday. So, if anybody needs counseling, we’ll send them to make an appointment with her. We also offer thermography. If someone has something going on in their bodies and wants to have digital imaging that’s non-invasive, they can get a bigger picture of what their physical body is doing.”
Duer has found a sense of purpose in doing all she can to promote health and healing.
“I’ve grown so much as a person doing what I’m doing. And I love our customers. They’ve become family to me.”
