Listerhill Credit Union has been in business for more than 70 years, having been founded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in 1952. But its only in the past decade that the $1.4 billion non-profit financial cooperative has had a presence in the Volunteer State.
"We have been in Middle Tennessee since 2013," begins Drew Edwards, Vice President of Marketing for Listerhill, explaining how the organization originally established a foothold in the region by merging with a credit union in Columbia.
"For several years, we have been trying to find the right location (for another branch),” continues Edwards, hence the brand-new location on Kedron Road, which had its official grand opening on April 16, celebrated with a ribbon-cutting and daylong festivities.
“It’s a beautiful location in a growing part of town,” adds Edwards, who has worked for Listerhill for 13 years and has been in his current position since 2023.
The longtime marketer takes care to emphasize how a credit union like Listerhill compares to a traditional bank.
“A lot of people think credit unions are not up to par with banks, but we have all the products and services that you would expect, including checking and savings accounts, commercial loans, and auto loans. We also offer investment services and retirement planning, and we have a full suite of mortgage products,” he notes. “And we have extremely competitive credit cards, including our Signature Rewards Card, a no-fee two-percent cash-back credit card with an interest rate that starts at 12.99% and doesn’t go any higher than 17.99%.”
In other words, Listerhill offers everything one would expect from a bank, except the organization is much more community-driven.
“We’re very invested in the community,” explains Edwards. “For instance, we have a program called Kicks for Kids, where we partner with schools and provide a brand-new pair of athletic shoes—as well as five pairs of Bomba socks—to every student. The program has been in existence since 2019, and we have given away thousands of pairs of shoes,” he adds, noting that a remarkably large number of students in Listerhill’s service area are wearing hand-me-downs or shoes that are already worn out.
"Providing new shoes and socks makes an immediate difference in a student’s life,” he says, before advising that Listerhill’s next shoe drop in Maury County will be at Joseph Brown Elementary in Columbia on May 2.
Meanwhile, Edwards confirms that Listerhill will also continue to focus on teaching financial literacy.
“Financial education is something we have always been behind,” he says, teasing the fall 2024 launch of a new Listerhill app designed to encourage students to save—with the help of their parents, of course.
The forthcoming app also fits in well with Listerhill’s emphasis on providing tools that incorporate cutting-edge technology, part of a focus on making the customer experience as personal and seamless as possible.
For example, “if you use our mortgage app, you are connected with one of our mortgage loan officers, and it’s a very personalized experience,” explains Edwards.
Or, if you would prefer not to interact with one of the four full-time staffers at the new Spring Hill branch, Edwards regards Listerhill’s Smart ATMs as some of the best in the business.
"You can do just about any transaction on them except get a loan or make an investment election. It’s a really cool, modern experience,” he concludes.
That said, Edwards encourages area residents to visit the new location to learn more about Listerhill and its offerings, noting that "Our branch manager in Spring Hill is from Middle Tennessee and super excited that the branch is now open.”
